ALLERGY & IMMUNOTHERAPY

Nasal allergies, also known as allergic rhinitis, occur when the immune system reacts to certain substances, called allergens, in the environment. These allergens can include pollens from plants, microscopic mites that thrive in household dust, various types of fungi and algae and certain foods.

Allergic rhinitis can be Perennial allergies which persist throughout the year and Seasonal allergies are triggered by outdoor allergens which tend to flare up during specific times of the year when these plants release their pollen.

The symptoms of nasal allergies include:

  1. Sneezing: Frequent and repeated sneezing .
  2. Nasal Congestion: Swelling and inflammation of the nasal passages can lead to a blocked or stuffy nose.
  3. Runny Nose: Excess mucus production can result in a runny or drippy nose.
  4. Headaches: Sinus headaches can occur due to pressure and inflammation in the sinuses.
  5. Ear Pain: Inflammation and congestion in the nasal passages can cause discomfort and even pain in the ears.

While surgical options are not effective in treating these types of allergies, understanding which specific allergens are causing the reactions is crucial.

Skin Prick Test(SPT)

The skin prick test (SPT) is a globally recognized gold standard for detecting allergies. It involves placing allergens on the upper skin and gently scratching the surface. If the body is allergic, a redness or raised bump (wheal) appears at the test site. This quick and reliable test helps identify specific allergens triggering allergic reactions

The skin prick test is valuable for a few reasons:

  1. Quick Results: The test delivers almost immediate results, allowing healthcare professionals to identify potential allergens during the same appointment.

  2. Wide Range of Allergens: Various allergens can be tested in a single session, aiding in the identification of specific triggers.

  3. Accuracy: The test’s reliability in detecting allergies has established it as a benchmark for other diagnostic methods.

Immunotherapy

Sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT) offers a convenient and potentially lasting solution for allergic rhinitis treatment. This approach involves placing allergen extracts under the tongue, gradually increasing doses over time. The immune system adapts, becoming less reactive to allergens. SLIT is safer than injections and can provide long-term symptom relief. However, results vary, and it’s essential to consult a medical professional to determine its suitability based on individual allergies and health conditions. While SLIT offers promise as a convenient and lasting allergy treatment, continued medical guidance is vital for optimal outcomes.
